A depiction of the Ascension of
St. Istvan

Ascension is the process by which mundane individuals become mores. In this process, the physical form enters the sub-corporeal and is obliterated, granting the individual power beyond the corporeal realm.[1]

The process of ascension has been recorded 6 times on Utopia, and as many as 19 times in other universes, though numerous other ascensions have likely occurred.[2] The status of morehood is hotly contested by scholars, but many agree that undergoing at least one ascension is a required component.[3]

In order to confirm ascensions, researchers use a technique known as Hikawa particle analysis.[4] While this technique can trace the date and location of a given ascension, it is so far unable to determine the actual process of the ascension.[5]

Process

The process of ascension is ill-understood. Historical accounts of ascension vary drastically, to the point that some scholars argue that the term is actually a catch-all for multiple unique paths to morehood.[6] Still, the process is universally described as blinding, brilliant, and painful.[7]

In order to begin ascension, one must be so entwined with the sub-corporeal (either through direct connections to another realm as is the case with The Genius in Human Skin or through knowledge itself) that they are able to abandon their corporeal form for a higher status.[8] These individuals then, typically through accomplishing a specific deed or act, are obliterated in both physical form and concept, becoming something “more” than themselves. This process is functionally the same in other universes, but the specific actions undertaken appear to differ significantly.[9]

The meta-universal significance of such actions appears minute, and it is unknown how they allow such individuals to ascend.[8] The actual method of obliterating the corporeal form is also unknown, though modern research suggests the physical properties of gateways may play a part.[10]

History

Of the six known Human-Turned-Mores, only 5 ascensions are well documented (the ascension of Vested Horizon was lost in the shattering of the Unified History). Almost all ascensions take place before 1000 CE.
