The Day of Awakening was the first contact between the Kjanuan government and the Heart Which Wanders and the subsequent destruction of the Ministry of Science building in Etsuyoki, Shani, Kjanu, on December 12 1981. Following the bast, the Council of Mores intervened in Kjanuan affairs and was given control over the Bureau of Sub-Corporeal Defense (BSCD).

A Bureau of Special Circumstances (BSC) expedition into the Modagami cave network discovered a gateway to the Heart Which Wanders at 3:44 p.m.[1] After first contact was made by expedition team leader Park Hyongmin, the BSC headquarters in the Ministry of Science was destroyed by an explosion caused by the Council of Mores. President Yukimori Maeko, learning of the attack at 3:46 p.m., created the BSCD to replace the decapitated BSC and manage the outbreak of anomalous material.[2]

In the next five minutes, two survey team members, Wu Chao-Chin and Oh Joon-tae also made contact with the Council of Mores before the information was relayed to president Yukimori.[3] The Council of Mores then. contacted Yukimori and claimed responsibility for the explosion. Following this, Yukimori gave the Council of Mores full control over the BSCD.[4]

The event was covered up as a terrorist bombing. It has been called the defining event of the Kjanuan nation and represents its first modern exposure to sub-corporeal entities.[5] In the years since the event research on other realities has provided many benefits to Kjanu. As a result, the Council of Mores has gained unrivaled influence over the Kjanuan Government.

Initial Contact

On December 12, 1981, an expedition led by Park Hyongmin entered the Modagami cave system to investigate a string of disappearances in the cave network dating back to 1902.[6] In a large cavern about 1,560 meters below the surface, the survey team encountered a large pile of bones underneath a 2-centimeter pocket of extremely cold air.[1] Upon further testing, the pocket was revealed to be a dimensional rift in reality. Park attempted to gather a sample from the anomaly using mechanical tools, but upon making contact with the rift he was forcibly repelled into the cave wall.[1]

Park reported being mentally transported to a dark lake under a night sky where he was watched by a collection of stars for a span of hours.[7] The survey team’s medic, Senega Yoichi began to treat Park for neurological damage from hitting his head on the wall.[8] As this occurred, survey team member Wu Chao-chin attempted to complete the sampling and accidentally brushed against the rift. Unlike Park, Wu was not repelled by the rift but reported the same mental transportation.[1]

Oh Joon-tae, the second in command of the team, took charge and ordered everyone to remain away from the rift. After confirming the stories of both Wu and Park, Oh touched the rift on his own at 3:46 p.m., confirming it to be a gateway to another dimension, and reported a communion with three beings.[1][9] The team then contacted the surface base to report their discovery.

Bombing

At 3:44 p.m. the Ministry of Science was destroyed in a blast of extradimensional energy stemming from Glaciers Melt Unto Aeons.[10] The blast was centered around the Bureau of Special Circumstance’s offices on the 36th floor, immediately killing 82% of the BSC staff and causing the collapse of the Ministry of Science.[11] The destruction happened at the same time Park Hyongmin was repelled from the rift.[10]

Response

At 3:46 p.m. President Yukimori was notified of an explosion of anomalous origin at the Ministry of Science. Lacking information on the origin or motive behind the explosion and with a decapitated BSC, Yukimori established the Bureau of Sub-Corporeal Defense to respond to the blast and re-organize the BSC staff.[2] Yukimori directed the remnants of the BSC to join the BSCD to prevent any leaks of anomalous material from the Ministry of Science ruins and to begin investigating the cause of the destruction.

At 4:33 p.m. Oh Joon-tae was able to reach Yukimori and tell her about the discovery in the caves of Modagami.[3] Yukimori was initially dismissive of connecting the discovery to the explosion, but upon returning to her office she was contacted by the Council of Mores. Yukimori reported having spent years in the dimension, which she called the Heart Which Wanders, conversing with three enigmatic beings who called themselves the Council of Mores.[12]

Following the discussion between Yukimori and the Council of Mores, Yukimori made the Council of Mores leaders of the BSCD. The Council of Mores claimed responsibility for the explosion and directed the new bureau to focus its efforts on suppressing any leaks of anomalous material as the Ministry of Information began designing a cover-up story.

Aftermath

All anomalous material was gathered by 11:00 p.m. on the day of the blast, and transported to secondary storage facilities across the country.[13] The attack forced the BSCD to increase security around anomalous storage facilities before the bureau began to distribute the anomalies it held to foreign agencies. The event greatly affected the anomalous governance in Kjanu. The BSCD, under the control of the Council of Mores, began investigating numerous dimensional anomalies within Kjanu and around the globe, rapidly advancing the anomalous sciences.[14] While the government was largely skeptical of the council’s leadership, the discoveries it provided swayed the bureau and the government as a whole.[15] Anomalous governance in Kjanu shifted from corporeal anomalies to solely extra-dimensional research.

Following her time in the Heart Which Wanders, President Yukimori experienced extreme insomnia and became reclusive. Yukimori became prone to ramblings and her journals became increasingly non-linear culminating in her retirement from politics.[16] The Council of Mores later explained that Yukimori was designated as a Visionary for the Heart Which Wanders and had been tasked with writing The Color Lilac.[17]

Leaks of anomalous knowledge

Despite the efforts of the BSCD, some anomalous influence reached the broader population. Most notably, the anomalous toxin “1772” spread rapidly through the relief efforts, causing lifelong damage for thousands of aid workers and civilians.[18] In 1989, investigative journalist Kim Hee-ryong wrote The Day of Awakening, which revealed the nature behind the attack as an alien attack. Kim’s retelling was suspiciously similar to the actual events and the Council of Mores, but further investigations found this to be coincidental.[19]

Cover-up

The explosion at the Ministry of Science was covered up as a Luddite terrorist attack. Two recent hires and victims of the blast, Lee Yong Nae and Masataka Shigeo were blamed for the attack due to their loose connections to Luddite organizations. The story was widely spread and used in order to suppress anti-government Luddite groups around the nation.[20]
